The Thousands is an influential online magazine and directory, with a chapter based in five Australian state capital cities. In our commission to create a style guide for the relaunch of their brand and sites, inspiration was sought from within varied writing systems and expressions – from concrete poetry to cattle branding to DIY publishing – ultimately shaping an appropriately colourful visual language.
Set within a long-unused factory site in Johnston Street, Collingwood, Magic Johnston exists as one of Melbourne’s largest and most dynamic creative spaces, comprising flexible communal and private workspaces, a niche bookshop, a boutique cinema and a coffee shop. The ever-evolving identity system is informed by this diversity, and the dynamism of Magic Johnston’s occupants, echoing the unpredictable passing style of basketball legend Earvin Johnson.
